Overview

Oman is home to a wide variety of migratory birds, especially during their seasonal journeys between nesting and wintering grounds. Many species travel from Europe, East Asia, and even as far as northern Siberia, covering nearly 5,000 kilometers.

Birdwatchers can explore different regions across Oman to spot these fascinating birds. Some of the best locations include Al Hikman Peninsula, Masirah Island, Al Wusta beaches, coastal lagoons, and the beautiful beaches and springs of Dhofar. Many bird species also inhabit Dimaniyat Islands and Musandam.

Itinerary

Day 1: Exploring Al Ansab Lagoons & Coastal Islands

After breakfast, you’ll meet your guide and start your journey at 8:00 AM. Your first stop will be Al Ansab Lagoons, located about 10 km west of Muscat. You’ll spend 2-3 hours exploring this incredible wetland, home to almost 200 species of birds.

• In summer, the water level drops, creating muddy areas perfect for wading birds.
• In winter, the ponds fill up, attracting a diverse range of species.
• From September to May, you can spot over 50 bird species in a single visit.
• Rare species like the Spotted Crake and Baillon’s Crake are often seen in the open.
• Black-Necked Grebes arrive in autumn, gradually increasing in number until December.

Later, you’ll head to Sawadi Islands and Fahal Island (about 4 km off Ras Al Hamra in Muscat). These islands are home to breeding sooty falcons and nesting red-billed tropicbirds. Boat trips around Fahal Island can be arranged for an up-close experience.
